The Irish high school system

  • Similar to high school systems in other countries
  • High school in Ireland starts at the age of 12 or 13
  • Consists of 2 three-year cycles; the Junior Cycle and the Senior Cycle
  • Junior Cycle, students study and take exams in 11 subjects
  • Senior Cycle students study and take exams in 6 or 7 subjects
  • The Irish high school qualification is called the Leaving Certificate – which can be used as the entry qualifications for any Irish or British university
  • Ideal for students who would like to study a broad range of subjects
