Starting my high school exchange in Ireland has been an exciting adventure! My name is Lars, I’m 16 years old from Germany, and 28th of August 2024 I began this incredible journey to be an exchange student in Ireland, departing from Munich Airport and travelling to Dublin.
The Journey to Ireland
I’ve always loved travelling, but flying solo was new for me. Despite some nerves and a brief flight delay, everything went smoothly. Upon arrival at the airport, I was greeted by a representative from High Schools International, who helped me get to the bus that would take me to my host family.
Meeting My Host Family
My host family is amazing! I was welcomed by my host parents, their four-year-old daughter, and six-year-old son. Not long after, my host brother from Spain arrived too. We all got along immediately, and I especially enjoy playing with my host sister. Her favourite game is hanging onto my leg while I lift her up and carry her around—she finds it hilarious!
First Impressions of School
Before school started, we had to get our uniforms. I’ve never worn one before, and while it felt strange at first, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. On my first day, I met some of my teachers and picked my subjects. A key moment was receiving the Dialann—an Irish diary that organises our timetable and homework. I found this quite different from the online systems I’m used to in Germany, but it was a welcome change. The local students gave us a tour of the school, and despite a few misunderstandings due to language, everything has gone smoothly. I’ve already made friends in my English class!
Exploring the Local Area
During my first weekend, I ventured out to a nearby town called Ashbourne with my host brother. It’s bigger than the village where we live, with more shops and a busier main street. We bought our school supplies there and got to know the area a bit better.
Making New Friends
I’ve also started connecting with other international students. I met a girl from Spain, and she’s been a great help, especially when it comes to navigating our large school. It's comforting to have someone who understands what it’s like to be in a new environment.
Reflections on My First Week as an Exchange Student in Ireland
Although I sometimes miss my friends back home, I’m excited about what’s to come. Ireland has already won me over, and I can’t wait to explore more of the country. The weather has been surprisingly sunny since I arrived, and I made the most of it by capturing an incredible sunset. I’ve been told the rain will come soon, so I’ll enjoy the sunshine while it lasts!
This is me!
