Finding Family Away from Home
When I first arrived in Ireland, I was filled with the usual mix of excitement and nerves that come with stepping into a new country, a new culture, and most importantly, a new home. Little did I know that the family that I was about to meet would not just welcome me with open arms but make me feel like I was truly one of them. My host family in Ireland consists of a warm and loving host mum and dad, my host sister and her boyfriend, and a host brother who’s currently living in Poland. I’ve built strong and unique relationships with every single one of them. Living here has been more than just staying with a host family—it’s been about finding a second home and a second family.Â
Â
A Sister I Never HadÂ
From the very first day, my host sister and I clicked. It felt so natural, like we had been sisters our entire lives. We talk and laugh just as any siblings would. Whether it was going up to the horses, on our way into town or helping her other choose outfits for an event, our bond feels effortless. She has become my confidante, my partner in crime, and someone I know I can always turn to.Â
Her boyfriend, on the other hand, is like the older brother I never asked for but absolutely adore. He and I have this playful banter that keeps everyone in stitches. We tease each other relentlessly and compete in the silliest of ways, whether it’s a game night or just who can tell the worst joke. His humour and easy going nature have added so much fun to my time here.Â
Â
My teasing Dad Â
My host dad and I share a relationship that’s built on humor and shared antics. He has this infectious energy and knack for lightening the mood, which makes every interaction with him a joy. Whether we’re cracking jokes, pulling pranks on each other, or competing to see who can come up with the funniest nickname, he’s become someone I genuinely look forward to spending time with.Â
His laughter is contagious, and our playful exchanges have created memories that I’ll cherish forever. I’ve never had a connection like this before, and it’s a constant reminder of how lucky I am to be part of this incredible family.Â
Â
Warm Conversations with My Host MumÂ
My host mum has a way of making me feel seen and heard. She’s the one who always checks in on how I’m doing, listens to my stories, and gives me advice when I need it most. Whether we’re chatting over tea in the kitchen or exploring a new place together, she has this calming presence that makes me feel right at home.Â
She’s not just a host mum—she’s become someone I look up to and respect deeply. Our conversations are filled with warmth and laughter, and her encouragement has given me the confidence to embrace every moment of my time in Ireland.Â
Â
A Family Bond That Transcends BordersÂ
Even though my host brother lives in Poland, I’ve had the chance to meet him a few times, and we hit it off instantly. He’s funny, kind, and easy to talk to. Our bond feels so natural, and I love hearing about his life abroad and sharing stories about mine.Â
And then there’s the grandmother, who made a comment that left me speechless and a little emotional. She told me that I not only feel like one of the family but that I even sound like them now. It was one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received because it shows how much I’ve truly become part of their lives.Â
Â
Adventures That Built Our ConnectionÂ
What makes this family even more special is how they brought me into their world right from the start. They didn’t just offer me a place to stay; they offered me experiences. From trips to explore Ireland’s stunning countryside to family outings and simple activities like baking or playing board games, they made an effort to include me in everything.Â
These adventures weren’t just about seeing new places—they were about getting to know each other in a natural, fun, and meaningful way. I got to see different sides of each family member, and they got to see mine. Over time, our bond deepened, and I started to feel like I truly belonged.Â

A Home Away from Home with my Host Family in Ireland
Living with my host family has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. They’ve shown me kindness, humour, and love in ways I never expected, and they’ve helped me adapt to life in Ireland while making me feel like part of the family.Â
Now, when I think about home, I think about Spain, but I also think about this incredible family that has taken me in and made me one of their own. They’ve turned what could have been just an exchange experience into something so much more—a lifelong connection and a second family I will always treasure.Â
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that family isn’t just about where you’re from. It’s about the people who make you feel like you belong. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.Â
